The pandemic devastated Virginia’s tourism and hospitality industry, causing record losses in revenues and shuttering roughly 1 in every 5 Virginia restaurants. The industry accounted for nearly half of the jobs lost in Virginia due to the pandemic.
 
Federal programs aimed at bolstering the industry have ended, leaving many in the industry without hope. But the General Assembly has a chance during Special Session to fully fund the $291 million VRLTA relief request for tourism and hospitality recovery. 
 
Here’s a snapshot of how the pandemic affected the industry: 

• Nearly 20% of Virginia’s restaurants permanently closed
• Nearly half of the jobs lost in the state were in the tourism and hospitality industry
• Costs have gone up 200-300% as the industry tries to reopen
• Travel expenditure in the state is still down 30% from healthy years

 
Tell legislators we need their help! Governor Northam has already prioritized funding the industry’s recovery, and Virginia legislators are back in Richmond for a special session beginning August 2 to decide on the allocation of new federal relief funds from the American Rescue Plan. Will you join with over 800 Virginia local businesses in the industry to ask our leaders for tourism and hospitality  recovery funds?
