Strong NPSI Showing Caps Defining Year for Virginia ProStart

NPSI_Recap_Blog

This year, the Virginia ProStart Invitational brought back individual competitions for cake decorating, chicken fabrication, and napkin folding - and saw over 60 students compete!

BALTIMORE, MD – Momentum is a word that gets used often, but this year, it’s measurable and structural.

Virginia ProStart experienced a 121% increase in competition participation. That kind of expansion signals more than enthusiasm; it reflects stronger alignment between education and industry, and a clear appetite for workforce-connected learning.

That growth extended beyond competition day. We’ve already welcomed six new schools into the ProStart network this year, expanding access to high-quality, industry-aligned culinary and restaurant management education across the Commonwealth. Each new program represents a pipeline—students gaining real skills, credentials, and exposure to career pathways that are both viable and in demand.

On the national stage, Virginia teams delivered a historic performance, achieving the highest placement the state has ever earned at the National ProStart Invitational. Their performance underscored not only technical excellence, but the professionalism and adaptability that today’s hospitality industry requires.

This year also marked a critical milestone: the launch of Virginia’s Youth Registered Apprenticeship (YRA) model for ProStart students. This is where the work deepens. We now have 18 schools across the state ready to participate, with students eager to transition from classroom learning into paid, structured, on-the-job training.

The opportunity is clear—and so is the need. The next phase of growth depends on employer engagement. We are actively seeking industry partners willing to invest in the next generation by opening their doors to student apprentices. The framework is built. The students are ready. Now, it’s about activation.

What this year represents is not a peak, but a pivot: from participation to placement, from exposure to experience. Virginia ProStart is a force and we're just getting started.
