A level playing field?

Orange County Review | October 5, 2017

Transient lodging taxes generate more than $150,000 locally, but two Orange County bed and breakfast owners are asking local government to level the playing field for them in an economy increasingly filled with short-term rental homes and rooms.

In August, local innkeepers Jack North and Jay Billie presented their concerns to the Orange County Planning Commission. They provided an overview on short-term lodging in the county, as well as suggestions on how all lodging providers could adhere to a consistent set of regulations. Both North and Billie have played a vital role in statewide conversations about transient lodging and the growth of the short-term rental market, advocating for equal treatment for all lodging facilities, especially Airbnbs.

McDonald's Is Testing a Vegan Burger

Food & Wine |  October 5, 2017

McDonald's burgers and eating vegan have never quite gone together, but if McDonald's Finland has its way, that just may change. Just announced, the new burger will be called the McVegan, which is somehow simultaneously a no-brainer and a word that feels very, very wrong, and will be made with a soy patty.

Vegans hoping to try a McDonald's burger and/or McDonald's fans hoping to try the McVegan will have a pretty limited window to participate in the trial, however, as the burger will only be offered at a McDonald's in Tampere, Finland from October 4 through November 21. Though if you can’t book a ticket in time, McDonald's Finland Marketing Director Christoffer Rönnblad did say that the fries served in the country's McDonalds are completely vegan as well, according to vegan blog Veggie Athletic.

Modern hospitality: Striking the right balance between high-tech and human

JLL Real Views  |  October 5, 2017

From iPad ordering to robot concierges, technology is automating many aspects of dining and hotel experiences – and freeing up staff to provide more personalized service.

At some Aloft hotels, a robot butler known as Botlr delivers room service and towels to guests, leaving staff to deal with more complex queries. In CitizenM hotels, guests bypass front desk queues at self check-in kiosks with hotel ambassadors to answer any questions, while at the Andaz West Hollywood, personal greeters take guests through an iPad check-in over a coffee or glass of wine.
