Statement: Virginia House of Delegates’ Passage of SB 1578

"Creating a fair and reasonable system for registration, accountability and transparency for short-term rentals and allowing local governments to take the lead in working with people who want to host short-term rentals is a win for communities and visitors alike. The action today by the House of Delegates regarding SB 1578, which already passed the Senate by an overwhelming margin, allows local governments to determine how to best welcome those who use Airbnb and other similar short-term rental platforms into their locality. While the lodging industry continues to support competition within the industry and welcomes a growth in the short-term rental market, we must expand in a way that protects neighbors and communities, and works best for individual localities; this legislation accomplishes both. We strongly encourage the Governor to support this bill that garnered bipartisan support by signing this legislation into law.”
