Airbnb | Limited Residential Lodging Act
Senator Vogel's Limited Residential Lodging Act (SB 416) is quickly moving through committees. However, this bill doesn't establish accountability and a transparent framework to ensure the proper taxes are being collected and remitted to the appropriate governments by short-term online rental companies. Let your Senators know now that SB 416 needs to be amended to establish the needed accountability and framework.

Support Reducing Virginia's Mixed Beverage Ratio | Fix the Mix

When visitors look for a place to stay in Virginia for vacation, they have several choices: hotels and inns, cottages, cabins or camps in parks. All of those are licensed, inspected for safety and taxed. But if visitors use an online rental program such as Airbnb, in which homeowners offer a room or a house for a day or a week or two, it’s renter — and homeowner and neighbor — beware. Tip credit violation suits on the rise

In my work as an expert witness for restaurant-related lawsuits, I have noticed that one class of suit is becoming more common: violations of the tip credit for non-tip-producing work. Here’s the legal definition of the tip credit according to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA): “FLSA permits an employer to take a tip credit toward its minimum wage obligation for tipped employees equal to the difference between the required cash wage (which must be at least $2.13) and the federal minimum wage.” (Restaurant Hospitality — 2/1/2016)
