FTC Seeking Public Comment

FTC is seeking Public Comments on the "Sharing" Economy — peer-to-peer platforms we typically associate with the Short Term Online Rental Market (STORM). We encourage our members to provide the FTC with your thoughts on this topic, here.

Sharing Economy Workshop on June 9The “Sharing” Economy: Issues Facing Platforms, Participants, and Regulators

The Federal Trade Commission will hold a workshop to explore issues relating to the growing internet peer-to-peer platforms — think STORM — and the economic activity these platforms facilitate. 8:30am to 5:00pm in Washington, DC. More Info »

The workshop will be free and open to the public. To register, please email sharingeconomy@ftc.gov with your name and organization.

If you can't attend, but would like to watch live, the FTC will be streaming the workshop. Live stream on June 9.

VHTA Awarded for Meals Tax Campaign
Alongside of our partners at McQuireWoods Consulting, VHTA was honored during last Thursday's 68th Virginia Public Affairs Awards. The team was awarded the Commonwealth Award of Merit in the Public Affairs category for its work on the Stop the Fairfax Meals Tax campaign.

Federal Overhaul On Overtime Exemption
Several members have inquired on the Department of Labor's impending changes to the Fair Labor Standards Act overtime regulations. The proposed changes could significantly increase the number of employees nationwide who qualify for overtime pay.
VHTA supports the NRA's position that any changes should be incremental in nature. There is a danger in sweeping changes that could limit employee flexibility, career opportunities, and incentive for upward movement by employers that will be carefully monitoring payroll related expenses. An initial ruling is expected this summer.

New Law Expands Food Truck Operation in Virginia   Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe went to Tysons Corner Monday to sign a new law allowing food trucks to expand where they operate. An old Virginia law made it illegal for food trucks to operate on many streets. They had to find pop-up parks or get creative.
